Since the start of 2018, the demise of Turkey as the golden child of the emerging market family has become increasingly evident, marked most notably by the 27% depreciation of the lira versus the US dollar in August. We discuss the factors that have led to Turkey’s fall from grace, as well as the likelihood that they could lead to a contagion effect among emerging market economies.
